George Crumb: Vox Balaenae/Voice of the Whale

Claire is featured on this ICE disc of chamber works by George Crumb on one of the last recordings in the composer-supervised Complete Crumb Edition recordings on Bridge Records, widely considered to be the definitive recorded collection of his music.

“While the International Contemporary Ensemble’s playing is stunning throughout, flutist Claire Chase is absolutely riveting, her voice and flute blending so completely as to be indistinguishable at key moments.”
Signal to Noise

“fits into my category of required listening, and is, at this point a Want List contender”

Undersong:
Music of Jason Eckardt

Mode Records
Fred Sherry, Tony Arnold, Claire Chase, Steven Schick, ICE

Jason Eckardt’s Undersong (2002-2008) is a cycle of chamber compositions that are performed consecutively, without pause, and form a CD-length super-composition. The title refers to the powerful and unyielding voice of the oppressed as well as the lyrical strands of interconnection that lie beneath the work’s fragmented surface.

The highly anticipated recording featuring soloists Fred Sherry, Claire Chase, Tony Arnold, and the International Contemporary Ensemble conducted by Steven Schick will be release by Mode Records on August 2.

Check back soon for more information.

The Bright and Hollow Sky
Nathan Davis

New Focus Recordings
ICE, Claire Chase, Phyllis Chen, Joshua Rubin

When Nathan Davis sat down to write pneApnea, he picked up a flute for the first time in his life, blew into it, and listened to the sound it produced. He blew into it again, and listened again. He scribbled a few notes to himself. Another breath, another sound, another scribble… a compositional process borne out of an ethic of exploration, and a basic respect for what musical instruments want to do.

Likewise, The Mechanics of Escapement was the product both of months learning the overtones and clackings of a particular toy piano (exploration quite evident to those of us who share studio space with Nathan), and an apprenticeship with a master woodworker to custom-build clock chimes by hand….

Enter Houses OfEnter Houses Of
Mario Diaz de León

Available September 25, 2009 on Tzadik

A member of the Shinkoyo collective, composer Mario Diaz de León is a talented young composer who has studied with Maryanne Amacher and George Lewis. His work focuses on acoustic/electronic hybrids that often fuse the two elements into unified meta-instruments. Often structured as walls and gestures of shimmering sound, his work is influenced by contemporary composers Scelsi, Ligeti, Dumitrescu and Radulescu as well as a wide range of electronic music, free improvisation, underground metal and American noise bands like Metalux and Sejayno. Hypnotic and ritualistic, the music relates to altered consciousness and the movement between vision states.

Performances by ICE (Claire Chase, Eric Lamb, Joshua Rubin, Nathan Davis, Wendy Richman) and the Talea Ensemble
