Complete Crumb Edition, Volume 12

George Crumb

“While the International Contemporary Ensemble’s playing is stunning throughout, flutist Claire Chase is absolutely riveting, her voice and flute blending so completely as to be indistinguishable at key moments.”
—Signal to Noise Magazine

“fits into my category of required listening”
—Fanfare Magazine

Chase is featured on this Bridge Records release of the International Contemporary Ensemble’s performances of George Crumb’s seminal chamber music works. This composer-supervised edition is widely considered to be the definitive recorded collection of Crumb’s music.

Undersong

“flautist Claire Chase’s navigation of the vocal complexities of 16 is truly heroic”
—Paris Transatlantic

Jason Eckardt’s Undersong (2002-2008) is a cycle of chamber compositions that are performed consecutively, without pause, and form a CD-length super-composition. The title refers to the powerful and unyielding voice of the oppressed as well as the lyrical strands of interconnection that lie beneath the work’s fragmented surface. The highly anticipated recording featuring soloists Fred Sherry, Claire Chase, Tony Arnold, and the International Contemporary Ensemble conducted by Steven Schick was released in August 2011.

The Bright and Hollow Sky

“Chase is a virtuosic flutist who is able to breathe life and add layers of nuance to the pieces she performs. This piece pushes her to use breathlike reverberations, bend notes and layer various parts simultaneously due to the use of processing. I am reminded of different ghost-spirits dancing around one another in a fascinating haze of patterns.”
—Downtown Music Gallery

This recording, by Chase’s longtime collaborator Nathan Davis, marks Davis’ deep collaboration with members of the International Contemporary Ensemble over a period of four fertile years. In addition to Chase, Peter Evans, Phyllis Chen, Joshua Rubin and members of ICE are featured on this album, which was named one of the Top Ten Classical Releases of 2011 by Steve Smith in Time Out New York.

“a delicate, introspective flute duet of Claire Chase and Eric Lamb: sweetness and aggression playing a chess game with equal power and skill.”
—New Music Box

Chase and Mario Diaz de Leon have enjoyed a decade-long collaborative relationship, and much of the composer’s flute music has been written for Chase, including several of the works featured on this recording, Diaz de Leon’s first major retrospective. His work focuses on acoustic/electronic hybrids that often fuse the two elements into unified meta-instruments. Often structured as walls and gestures of shimmering sound, his work is influenced by contemporary composers Scelsi, Ligeti, Dumitrescu and Radulescu as well as a wide range of electronic music, free improvisation, underground metal and American noise bands like Metalux and Sejayno. Hypnotic and ritualistic, the music relates to altered consciousness and the movement between vision states.
